Nicholas Hoult and Jack O’Connell are circling A Life In The Day, the Tony Gittelson script about the life of Brian Epstein, who discovered and managed the Beatles from 1961-1967, before he died of a drug overdose at 32. Justin Chadwick (Tulip Fever) is in talks to direct the project, which David Permut will produce through his Permut Presentations banner along with Dylan Sellers’ Rivers Edge Films.

Rivers Edge has a strategic partnership with Kevin Frakes’ Palmstar Media that has Palmstar funding Sellers’ overhead, production and development costs. The two companies are committed to jointly produce four to five films with budgets between $20 million-$40 million.

This is still a fluid situation with no deals set, but if it all comes together, Hoult would play the flamboyant and gay Epstein, with O’Connell the brilliant but troubled John Lennon. The intense relationship between the two men has been the subject of much debate and analysis over the years. As recently as this week, Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono mused about the possibility that Epstein and Lennon had sex with each other. She was quoted in the Daily Beast as saying, “It was almost a love affair, but not quite. It was never consummated. But it was a pretty intense relationship.”

Chadwick, coming off the Weinstein Company period drama Tulip Fever — which also stars O’Connell — has a number of projects he’s choosing from with A Life In The Day believed to be near the top of the list for what would be his next project. Hoult is currently in pre-production on Sand Castle opposite Henry Cavill and Luke Evans. O’Connell has George Clooney-starrer Money Monster in post.

Chadwick is repped by Independent Talent Group in the UK and UTA in the U.S. Hoult is repped by 42 in the UK and UTA in the U.S. O’Connell is repped by Conway Van Gelder Grant in the UK and CAA in the U.S. Tony Gittelson is repped by ICM Partners and Donaldson & Callif.

A24 and DirecTV have acquired U.S. rights for the sci-fi drama “Equals” starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, Variety has learned.

The film, which premiered at Venice, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Drake Doremus, who earned critical raves for 2011’s Sundance grand-jury-prize winner “Like Crazy,” directs the picture which offers up an off-beat take on the science-fiction genre.

The deal for the film was made with DirectTV, which will first debut the picture, before it opens in select theaters via its distribution pact with indie label A24.

“Equals” tells the story of a future dystopian society where its inhabitants don’t feel any emotions, but it’s meant to double as a parable for ending a long-term relationship, Doremus explained during a question and answer session following its Toronto debut.

A24 is currently fielding the Oscar- hopeful “Room,” starring Brie Larson and scored a critical and commercial hit with the Amy Winehouse documentary “Amy.”

The deal was handled by UTA Independent Film Group.

It’s official. The Nicholas Hoult thriller Collide becomes the first project offloaded by Relativity Media as the company continues to move through the bankruptcy process.

Open Road Films has acquired the European-set chase movie for U.S. distribution from IM Global. According to court documents filed Sept. 26 in New York and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, the Ryan Kavanaugh-led studio was trying to sell the film to IM Global for a $200,000 payment plus contingent compensation of up to $630,000. The proposed agreement called for Open Road to provide Relativity with audit statements.

Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg and IM Global CEO Stuart Ford have confirmed that Open Road will release the film wide on April 1.

Directed by Eran Creevy and starring Hoult, Felicity Jones, Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley, the film was financed by IM Global and China’s DMG Entertainment, with additional financing by Sycamore Pictures. Joel Silver produced along with Ben Pugh and Rory Aitken via 42 and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones via Automatik. Action Concept also was a producer.

The film revolves around a young American couple (Hoult and Jones) who are plunged into a game of cat-and-mouse across Germany when they find themselves caught between two ruthless feuding criminals (Hopkins and Kingsley).

Luke Evans and Henry Cavill have joined Nicholas Hoult in Sand Castle, the war drama being directed by Fernando Coimbra (Narcos) based on the screenplay by Chris Roessner. Roessner was previously Mark Gordon’s assistant and his former boss is producing with Treehouse Pictures’ Justin Nappi and 42’s Ben Pugh. Shooting is now set to start November 2.

Set in Iraq circa 2003, the pic is based on Roessner’s experience as a machine gunner in Iraq’s Sunni Triangle. The plot centers on Matt Ocre (Hoult), who is part of a mission to repair a broken water system in the dangerous and unstable Iraqi village of Baqubah. While the people of Baghdad welcome the Americans as saviors, the villagers resist their presence and Matt and his unit must try to convince the community that they are part of the solution, not the problem, in order to save the town and get out alive. Evans is playing the sergeant in charge of Ocre’s unit and Cavill is the special forces captain running the operation in Baqubah.

Voltage Pictures is handling international sales for the film and will present it at next month’s American Film Market. Producers hold U.S. rights to the pic, which Gordon has shepherded from the start. Treehouse (Arbitrage, All Is Lost) is fully financing. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones is executive producer.

Nicholas Hoult will star as J.D. Salinger in the biopic “Rebel in the Rye,” with Danny Strong directing from his own screenplay.

The script was adapted from the Kenneth Slawenski biography “J.D. Salinger: A Life.” Black Label Media is financing, with Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill producing alongside Bruce Cohen, Jason Shuman and Danny Strong.

Bloom will introduce “Rebel in the Rye” to foreign buyers at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival, while CAA is representing the North American rights.

The movie will explore the life and mind of the secretive author and tell the story of the birth of “The Catcher in the Rye.” The story will explore his rebellious youth, his experiences on the bloody front lines of World War II, enduring great love and terrible loss, a life of rejection to the pages of the New Yorker and his writer’s block — which led to a spiritual awakening.

“’The Catcher in the Rye’ is a classic coming-of-age story which continues to make a significant impression six generations later,” said Alex Walton of Bloom. “The world has long been fascinated with J.D. Salinger, whom the talented Nicholas Hoult will bring to life in this enigmatic role.”

Strong is known best for creating the series “Empire.” His screenplay credits include “The Butler,” the two “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” films and the HBO films “Recount” and “Game Change.”

Hoult’s credits include “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

He also stars in the upcoming sci-fi romance “Equals” alongside Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver. The film, directed by Drake Doremus, will world premiere in the international competition section at the Venice Film Festival and will have its North American premiere in the Special Presentations program at the Toronto Film Festival.

The Weinstein Company announced in 2013 that it was working with Shane Salerno on developing a feature film adaptation of Salerno’s documentary about the author with a focus on Salinger’s life between his military service in World War II and the 1951 publication of “Catcher in the Rye.”

Salerno began working on the documentary in 2004. Salinger died in 2010. The documentary grossed $650,000 for TWC in 2013.

Hoult is represented by UTA, 42 and Felker Toczek.
