“Kill Your Friends” Sells to Well Go USA

Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to Nicholas Hoult’s drama “Kill Your Friends” and plans a release early next year, Variety has learned.

Altitude Film Entertainment is selling international markets at Cannes. James Corden, Craig Roberts, Rosanna Arquette, Ed Skrein (“Deadpool”) and Tom Riley also star.

The movie is directed by Owen Harris and written by John Niven, based on his 2008 novel. Producers are Gregor Cameron, Will Clarke of Altitude Film and Len Blavatnik of AI Film and Warner Music Group.

“Kill Your Friends” is set in the 1990s and centers on a 27-year-old A&R man slashing and burning his way through London’s music industry while freely indulging in an unending orgy of self-gratification. With the hits drying up, the only way he’s going to salvage his sagging career is by becoming even more brutal.

The movie’s soundtrack includes songs from Radiohead, Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Oasis and Blur.

“If you loved music in the 90s, and you liked ‘The Player,’ ‘Swimming with Sharks’ and ‘American Psycho,’ it still doesn’t come close to describing how savagely brilliant this movie is,” said Doris Pfardrescher, president and CEO of Well Go USA. “The way it skewers every part of the music industry is outrageous and hysterical,” she said.

Hoult can be seen this week with Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which opens worldwide.

Well Go has been active in the run-up to Cannes, acquiring North American rights to Ringo Lam’s gangster thriller “Wild City” and to Hsiao-Hsien Hou ’s Cannes competition film “The Assassin.”

The deal for “Kill Your Friends” was negotiated between Pfardrescher, UTA Independent Film Group and Mike Runagall of Altitude Film Sales on behalf of the filmmaker. Well Go plans to take the film on the festival circuit this year.

Executive producers are Aviv Giladi, Vince Holden, Andy Mayson, Mike Runagall, Steve Norris, Ivan Dunleavy, Danny Perkins, Jenny Borgars, Kate Buckley, Nicholas Hoult, Johnny Vaughan, Amanda Ghost and James Sully.
