Variety put up an article in which Nicholas’ co-star Kristen Stewart talks about working with him on “Equals”. Nicholas also comments on playing his character.

Drake Doremus’ sci-fi romance “Equals,” which follows two forbidden lovers on their journey to find freedom in a futuristic society that prides itself on having eradicated emotions, had its emotional L.A. premiere at ArcLight Hollywood on Thursday night.

The film, which stars Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, along with Jacki Weaver, Aurora Perrineau and Tom Stokes, bowed at the Venice International Film Festival last year.

“I was never really a sci-fi nerd, but I was always fascinated with the genre,” Doremus said. “I thought it was an interesting landscape to set a love story and try to doing something warm. Most sci-fi films to me are very cold and very distant and I wanted to make something that was the opposite of that.”

Stewart and Hoult complimented Doremus on his unique approach to helping spark chemistry between the onscreen lovers during rehearsals. “It wasn’t about learning lines,” Stewart said. “It was about breaking down barriers and getting to know each other.”

Hoult still found many complexities in playing a character that “isn’t meant to feel” and “understanding how that changes throughout the movie.” “It’s kind of like these characters have been alive and know how to do everything a human knows how to do, but they don’t feel,” he said. “So, it’s like a baby feeling emotions for the first time, but not knowing how to process them.”

A24 and DirecTV acquired U.S. rights to “Equals,” which is set for a July 15 theatrical release.

A24 and DirecTV have acquired U.S. rights for the sci-fi drama “Equals” starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, Variety has learned.

The film, which premiered at Venice, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Drake Doremus, who earned critical raves for 2011’s Sundance grand-jury-prize winner “Like Crazy,” directs the picture which offers up an off-beat take on the science-fiction genre.

The deal for the film was made with DirectTV, which will first debut the picture, before it opens in select theaters via its distribution pact with indie label A24.

“Equals” tells the story of a future dystopian society where its inhabitants don’t feel any emotions, but it’s meant to double as a parable for ending a long-term relationship, Doremus explained during a question and answer session following its Toronto debut.

A24 is currently fielding the Oscar- hopeful “Room,” starring Brie Larson and scored a critical and commercial hit with the Amy Winehouse documentary “Amy.”

The deal was handled by UTA Independent Film Group.

You might recognize him as the young Hank McCoy from “X-Men: Days Of Future Past”, or from his time playing a zombie with heart in “Warm Bodies”, but if you’re unfamiliar with the work of Nicholas Hoult you’re about to get a face-full with his two latest projects – “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Equals”.

During his cowboy hat and tequila soaked time at SXSW, Rick Campanelli also got the chance to speak with Hoult at The Boffin’s Lab Powered by Jaguar and WIRED Insider party and the actor opened up about his experience on set of the highly anticipated “Mad Max” reboot.

“I’m just glad everyone’s going to get to see it,” the actor tells Rick. “We filmed it two and a half years ago, and it’s been in director George Miller’s…it’s been in his mind for many years more than that, so it’s exciting.”

One of the things that got the young actor’s engine revving was the cars. “My car in [the film] is a V8 hot rod,” he explains continuing on about why he “got chills” on set.

Selective Films has acquired French rights to Drake Doremus’ sci-fi love story “Equals.” Starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, “Equals” is set in the future where emotions have been eradicated, but a disease can cause them to return.

Just when most French distributors are either too cash-strapped or cautious to continue picking up U.S. indies, Jean-Philippe Tirel’s company is staying active, targeting few high-profile U.S. projects at script stage, such as “Nightcrawler.”

Selective Films also recently acquired “The Riot Club” (with Orange/Paramount) and “The Coup” (with SND).

Tirel and Selective Films partner Maya Hariri are attending the AFM with acquisition and marketing topper Romain Daubeach and is in discussions on four more titles.

Under its deal with Orange Studio, the film co-production and co-distribution arm of the telco company, “Equals” will be released in France by Paramount in late 2015 or early 2016.

Repped by Mister Smith Entertainment, the movie began shooting in Japan and Singapore in August. Ridley Scott’s Scott Free is producing with Route One.

Deadline is reporting that Nicholas and Kristen Stewart are being eyed for the lead roles in the science fiction movie Equals.

Drake Doremus is casting up his next film Equals for an early 2014 start, and I hear he is courting The Twilight Saga‘s Kristen Stewart and Warm Bodies and X-Men: Days Of Future Past star Nicholas Hoult to be the young couple that anchors this science fiction tale penned by Nathan Parker (Moon).

Doremus talked up the project while doing press for Breathe In, the most recent film he helmed that stars his Like Crazy heroine Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Amy Ryan. Indian Paintbrush, Steven Rales’ production/financing company that forged a relationship with Doremus on Like Crazy, is backing the film.

Stewart is repped by Gersh and Hoult by UTA and 42.
