Last fall, audiences were captivated by the outrageous adventures of Amazing Amy in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl,” so much so that it appears many forgot about another Gillian Flynn adaptation that has been in the can for a while now: namely “Dark Places,” starring Charlize Theron. While you might think an A-list leading, big screen take on a best-seller from a hotly buzzed author might warrant a bigger campaign, the movie is getting ready to open overseas in just over a month, and the first international poster has arrived.

Corey Stoll, Tye Sheridan, Chloe Grace Moretz, Nicholas Hoult, Sterling Jerins and Christina Hendricks co-star in the movie that follows Libby Day (Theron), who as a teenager witnesses the murder of her family and testifies against her brother when he is tried for the crime. 25 years later, Libby is brought before the secretive, crime-solving Kill Club which wants to uncover the truth. Gilles Paquet-Brenner (“Sarah’s Key”) directed the flick, and we’ll soon see if his work measures up to Fincher’s obsessive attention to detail.

“Dark Places” has its premiere screening in Paris on March 30th and opens in France on April 8th.

A24, in partnership with DirecTV, has picked up U.S. distribution rights for Dark Places, the adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s 2009 mystery novel.

The film, directed and adapted by Gilles Paquet-Brenner, stars Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Nicholas Hoult and Christina Hendricks. The story centers on a woman (Theron) who survived the brutal killing of her family as a child. Years later, she’s forced to revisit the events that left her life in shambles and put her brother in jail.

The deal comes on the heels of the strong success of Gone Girl, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Flynn wrote the novel Gone Girl and adapted it for the David Fincher-helmed film, which received critical praise and has earned $288 million worldwide.

Dark Places is a New York Times best-seller, and Flynn’s second of three novels. The film rights were scooped up in 2010, with Theron eventually coming on board to star and produce.

Cathy Schulman, Matthew Rhodes, Azim Bolkiah, Matt Jackson, Beth Kono, A.J. Dix, Theron and Stephane Marsil produced Dark Places while Jeff Rice, Jose Levy, Matthias Ehrenberg, Nigel Sinclair, Guy East, Tobin Armbrust, Jillian Longnecker, Ginger Sledge and Peter Safran executive produced.

The film is an Exclusive Media, Denver & Delilah Films, Hugo Productions and Mandalay Pictures production. Bloom is handling the international sales for former Exclusive Media productions.

Upcoming films being released in partnership between A24 and DirecTV include Atom Egoyan’s Captive starring Ryan Reynolds, and Julius Avery’s directorial debut Son of a Gun, starring Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites.

A24 most recently released Laggies, starring Moretz and Keira Knightley. The company’s upcoming films include A Most Violent Year starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, which premiered at AFI Fest on Nov. 6 and hits theaters beginning Dec. 31.

A24 negotiated the rights for the film with WME Global.

International buyers are more than willing to follow Charlize Theron to Dark Places, as Exclusive Media racked up pre-sales deals across Europe and Asia for the feature film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel about a brutal crime and its impact a quarter of a century later.

Exclusive, which is producing and co-financing Dark Places, closed all-rights deals for the title at AFM for France (Mars), Canada (Remstar), Japan (CCC), Scandinavia (Svensk), Switzerland (Ascot Elite) and Russia (West) among many others. Dark Places has also all but sold out across Latin America, Eastern Europe and South-East Asia.

Theron stars as Libby Day, a woman who, as a 7-year-old-girl, survived the massacre of her family. She testified against her brother as the murderer but, 25 years later, a group investigating the crime, confronts her with questions about what really happened.

Nicholas Hoult, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christina Hendricks and Drea de Matteo also star. Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key) wrote and directed Dark Places with Exclusive Media and Cuatro Plus Films providing financing.

Dark Places, the feature adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel starring Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron (Monster), Nicholas Hoult, Chloë Grace Moretz, Emmy Award-nominated actress Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Corey Stoll and Tye Sheridan commenced principal photography this week on location in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Dark Places is written and directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key), and is co-financed by Exclusive Media and Cuatro Plus Films. Exclusive Media is producing with Stephane Marsil of Hugo Films, Charlize Theron’s Denver and Delilah Productions partners Beth Kono and AJ Dix; and Mandalay’s Cathy Schulman and Matt Rhodes. Exclusive Media’s Matt Jackson will produce, with the company’s Guy East, Nigel Sinclair, Tobin Armbrust and Alex Brunner Executive Producing. Peter Safran will also serve as an Executive Producer.

Dark Places tells the story of Libby Day (Theron), a woman who, at the age of 7, survives the massacre of her family and testifies against her brother as the murderer. Twenty-five years later, a group obsessed with solving notorious crimes confronts her with questions about the horrific event. Told in a series of flashbacks from the points of view of Libby’s mother, Patty, and her brother, Ben, Libby is forced to revisit that fateful day and begins to question what exactly she saw – or didn’t see – the night of the tragedy.

Rounding out the cast alongside Theron, Hoult, Moretz, Hendricks, Toll and Sheridan are supporting cast members Sterling Jerins, who will play Young Libby, and Shannon Kook.
