Deadline is reporting that Nicholas has dropped out of “The Discovery” due to scheduling conflicts. He is being replaced by Jason Segel.
Robert Redford and Jason Segel have joined Rooney Mara in Charlie McDowell’s The Discovery. Segel is replacing the originally cast Nicholas Hoult, who is said to have dropped out of the picture which is scheduled to go before the cameras later this month because of scheduling conflicts. The actor had been attached to the picture since last fall. The film, written by McDowell and Justin Lader, will shoot in Rhode Island.
The scheduling conflict is with Rebel in the Rye in which Hoult is starring in as author J.D. Salinger with Kevin Spacey. Directed by Danny Strong (who scripted The Butler), the film is prepping to go before the cameras next month. Hoult is also part of director’s Xavier Dolan’s English-language debut The Death And Life Of John F. Donovan with Natalie Portman and Thandie Newton. That project is scheduled now for a fall start.
It is being reported that Zoey Deutch has joined Nicholas in “Rebel in the Rye”.
Nicholas Hoult was cast last autumn in the J.D. Salinger biopic Rebel In The Rye. He’s since been joined by Kevin Spacey, Laura Dern, Brian D’Arcy James and Hope Davis. And latest to the roster is Zoey Deutch.
Director and screewnriter Danny Strong has adapted the film from Kenneth Slawenski’s Salinger biography, J.D. Salinger: A Life. The ambitious aim is to get inside the mind of the secretive writer, including, of course, the writing of his iconic novel The Catcher In The Rye. Rebel will look at Salinger’s youth, his time spent in conflict during World War II, finding love, enduring loss and years of rejection letters from The New Yorker, which fuelled chronic writer’s block but also helped him find his voice.
Hoult is Salinger, and Deutch will play Oona O’Neill, daughter of playwrite Eugene O’Neill. The New York socialite and Salinger “enjoyed” a fraught romantic relationship. Spacey plays Columbia professor Whit Burnett, one of Salinger’s early mentors.
Strong, who got his start as an actor, has become an accomplished writer of both films and television, scoring two Emmy Awards along the way. He co-created the TV hit Empire with Lee Daniels and directed an episode of the show. Rebel In The Rye marks his debut directing a film. Black Label Media have provided the backing.
There was some thought that shooting would start at the end of last year. That didn’t happen and the film remains in pre-production, but the start date must be close now. Expect the film in cinemas sometime next year. We’ll next see Hoult in the rather different X-Men: Apocalypse on May 19.
The official teaser trailer for Nicholas’ film “Equals” has been released. Be sure to check it out below. Captures from the trailer have been added to our gallery as well as a film poster. The film is set to be released this summer.
Deadline is reporting that Nicholas, alongside Natalie Portman and Thandie Newton, has joined “The Death and Life of John F. Donovon”.
Natalie Portman, Nicholas Hoult and Thandie Newton have boarded the already-starry cast of Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s English-language debut The Death And Life Of John F. Donovan. The trio join the previously announced Kit Harington, Jessica Chastain, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, Michael Gambon, Bella Thorne, Chris Zylka and Emily Hampshire. It is a measure of Dolan’s pulling power with talent that the 26-year-old has assembled such an impressive lineup.
The film takes place in the early 2000s and centers on the tribulations of John F Donovan (Harington), an American TV star in his late 20s, and his correspondence with Rupert Turner, a young actor-to-be living with his mother in England. Their lives take dramatic turns when the existence of their pen pal relationship is publicly exposed, eliciting the most ill-founded assumptions and sending Donovan in a vertical downfall. A decade later, the young actor recollects his relationship with his past idol over the course of an interview.
Lyse Lafontaine of Lyla Films (Laurence Anyways), Dolan and Nancy Grant of Sons of Manual (Mommy, Tom At The Farm, I Killed My Mother) are producing with exec producer Joe Iacono.
